"I say this as a concession, not as a command. But I wish everyone were single, just as I am. But God gives to some the gift of marriage, and to others the gift of singleness." 1 Cor. 7:6-7 (NLT)
I found this poem this morning and thought I'd share it in connection with today's verse:
SINGLE, BUT NOT FOR LONG
I'm single right now, but not for long,
The longer I wait, the more I become strong,
As I wait my focus is not on my spouse,
Instead I focus on building my House,
My House is the inner man, my spirit and soul,
That part of me I want to be made whole,
So I wait on the Lord for my spouse to be,
As I know my spouse patiently awaits me,
Being single is a gift I really adore,
As a single I realize that I can always do more,
More for the Lord as He guides and directs me,
This is a privilege I will lose when I marry,
I'm not saying to be married is wrong,
Because I know I won't be single for long,
But in my time that I'm single and free,
I can do more as he guides and directs me,
So my advice to you as you have single time left,
To do all God has for you when the timing is best.

Don't mean to burst your bubble, but there's no such thing as "the gift of singleness". The NLT removed that phrase last year, because it was giving people the erroneous impression that you were supposed to wait passively for a spouse to come along. The bible speaks of marriage entirely in the language of personal choice and human effort (1 Cor 7:8, 9, 36,39, 1 Cor 9:5, Prov 18:22). There is no guarantee of a spouse, no NT examples of divine mate-finding or confirmation that this is "the one". Likewise, there is no requirement that you see your singleness as a "gift" when you really want to be married, nor is there any prerequisite to attain any contentment nirvana. If people are not content with their singleness, it's because God designed human beings to live together in holy matrimony. It's only natural.
