Haggai 1:3-4: "Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: 'Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?'"
When I exercise, I like to run on a treadmill. I get to watch the miles go flying by as I read my book or listen to my iPod...all the while working off last night's chocolate chip cookies... The readout on the machine stops when it hits 3 miles...but do you know how far I actually travel? Nowhere. I don't move. I run in the same spot and don't actually travel anywhere....even though there is every reason to believe otherwise.
I wonder sometimes if our spiritual development is the same way...we earn money, but give too little away... we have gifts, but we don't use them for others... we read our Bibles but struggle in applying what we learn to our day-to-day... Lots of effort...very little spiritual movement forward. A bunch of sweat... and not a whole lot of eternal result.
In the passage today, God is concerned that His people were selfishly rebuilding their own interests over His....their homes over the temple. Are we the same way? This morning, I want to challenge you a little... You have multiple gifts...you have been entrusted with some of God's money...you have read many passages of scripture... what are you using them for? God or man? Your home or His church?
I'm asking myself the exact same thing...trust me...I've got some work to do with this. Will you pray for me? I will for you...
